How to cut a line gown with tail? This article will teach you the most common method to make your prom or formal gown look even more dramatic. But first, let me give you some background information about line gowns.
It’s not an easy task cutting through all that tulle, so if you don’t have experience doing it, I recommend asking your tailor (or your grandma) for help.
You can also cut the fabric yourself after measuring and planning in advance to avoid mistakes, but in this case it would be best to just find somebody to do it for you.

The difference between a ballgown and a lined gown
A ballgown is typically floor-length, has an open back and usually has sleeves. A lined gown is more fitted and may have a closed back or no back.
A ballgown can be worn as a wedding dress, while the lined gown can be worn for other occasions.
The best way to get the length of your skirt right without cutting too much off is to measure from the top of your waistband down.
First, place your skirt on a flat surface so that it lays out smoothly like you would if you were going to wear it.
Then measure the distance from the top of your waistband down and make a mark that corresponds with that measurement on both sides of where you are planning on cutting.
You will need to place one side on a flat surface (table) and roll it up enough so that you can see where you need to cut before pinning it in place so it doesn’t move around when you are cutting.
Make sure the pins are well away from where the knife will be used so they don’t get accidentally stuck in your fabric!

How to properly take measurements
To get the best measurements for your dress, you’ll want to make sure you have someone help you. Start by measuring your waist and hips, then measure the widest part of your hips.
Once you’ve taken these three measurements (waist, hips, and hip-widest), it’s time to measure for the length of the dress. For example, if your waist measurement is 28 and your hip measurement is 34,
then your hip-widest would be 38. So for that waist measurement of 28, we would need about 14 in length for the dress in order for it to be long enough.
Now that we know our measurements and how long we want this beautiful dress to be, it’s time to start cutting!
How to cut a line gown with tail?
Step 1. Start by finding the point at which you want your dress to split. Typically this is right in the middle of the back or at the natural waistline.
Step 2. This step is not necessary but often helpful for getting an idea of how much fabric you will need for your dress: measure from the top of your shoulder bone down to where you want your dress to split and then double that measurement (for both sides).
Step 3. Now, take a pair of scissors and carefully cut along that line all the way up to where it meets in the back. You now have two pieces of fabric that would make a whole dress if connected together. Your new half-dress should be roughly the same length as your original dress. It’s best to use sewing tape to keep those pieces of fabric together while you continue cutting so they don’t get mixed up.
Step 4. Take one of the halves and flip it upside down so that its hem goes across your chest instead of at the bottom of your hip bones as before.
Step 5. Pull out excess fabric under your arms until they are even on each side–this will help balance out how tight the bust is on one side or another when wearing a halter neckline .

Tips for cutting the fabric
Cut the fabric by laying it on a large piece of paper. The paper should be at least as wide as the widest part of the fabric and long enough so that you can fold over both ends and have them meet in the middle.
Fold the end that is on your right-hand side over and make sure that it meets in the middle. If you want to ensure that the length is accurate, lay your ruler on top of this folded section of fabric and measure how much you need for each section.
Cut off this amount from your left-hand side, making sure not to cut too close or else it will be difficult or impossible to sew later. Repeat these steps for every piece of fabric until all are measured out.
Once you are done, unfold your paper and place one of the pieces on top with the finished edge aligned with one edge of the paper. Then place another piece directly next to it overlapping about an inch (2cm).
Align all four corners before pinning. Pinning isn’t necessary but it’s better if you do it because then everything stays together better when you start cutting around curves like necklines and armholes.
Once everything is pinned, draw around all sides with either chalk or pencil marking where you’ll cut so that they’re easy to see once you start cutting.
How to sew the dress
1) Get the dress on and pin it around the waist.
2) With an extra-sharp pair of shears, cut up the back seam at least 6 to create a slit.
3) Cut up each side seam, starting at the bottom of the bodice, until you have created two slits that meet in the middle of your spine.
4) Pull out one layer of fabric from inside the dress (so it will look like an upside-down V) and trim off excess fabric.
5) Repeat step 4 on opposite side, then turn dress right-side-out again.
6) Finish by pressing seams open and sewing them together so they don’t unravel or fray.
